The three businesses shown on the map take a large share of clicks for local searches, and getting there works differently from website SEO.
For searches with local intent, Google often shows a map with a few businesses above the regular results, and mobile users frequently call one of them without scrolling further. Getting there depends mainly on your Google Business Profile and how consistent it is with the rest of the web.
Google’s three factors
Google says local results are based on relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot change distance; everything else is in your hands.
What matters most
- Primary category. The single most influential setting. Choose the category for the work you most want customers for, add others as additional categories and list remaining services in the Services section.
- Real business name. Adding keywords to the name breaks Google’s guidelines and can get the profile restricted.
- Consistent name, address and phone on the profile, your website, social accounts and directories. Mark them up on your site with
LocalBusinessstructured data. - Reviews. Ask at the moment of delivery, spread requests over time, and encourage customers to mention the service. Never offer incentives, never solicit only happy customers and never post reviews from staff or friends. Reply to every review.
- An active profile. Accurate and holiday hours, real photos, regular updates and a complete services list.
- A strong website. A dedicated page per core service with the city in its title, and the same contact details as the profile. Avoid near-duplicate pages for every district.
Service-area businesses
Businesses that visit customers can hide their address and define a service area, but still need a genuine address for verification. Virtual office addresses are a common reason profiles run into trouble.
Be patient, and measure properly
A newly verified profile takes time to earn trust. Track progress in the profile’s own performance report rather than by searching from your phone, which is skewed by location and history. While the profile matures, local search ads can fill the gap; see SEO or Google Ads? and our SEO service.
